No matter how close you are to someone, or how much you love them, you can’t like everything about them. You can love them and still not like a few things that they do, and that does not mean the relationship is doomed. There are many things that we can overlook or tolerate because the rest of the person is so amazing. However, no one is perfect, and some have a tendency to develop a habit or two that is just down right annoying. In fact, I would bet that everyone has this problem a few times in their life. This is when behavior modification comes into play, sometimes to save the relationship.
You have to be careful when you want to try behavior modification on an adult. You should never try to change someone into what you want them to be just for our own needs. You should always pick a spouse, for example, because you like them exactly as they are. However, there are times when they may do things that are of a danger to you or them. If someone has a habit of drinking and driving, or they are delving into drugs, you may want to see if you can find anything that can help you with behavior modification. If not, your relationship may very well be doomed.
When it comes to children, modifying behavior is something you have to do. You want your children to grow up to be happy and responsible adults. That is not always easy, but you have to try as best as you can for those results. When they do things they are not supposed to do, you have to use behavior modification principles to show them what they are not doing right and how you expect them to behave. You can’t make this a negative process however, and that is when things get tricky. If you feel lost, go out and find books on the subject so that you know you are doing things in the best possible manner.
