Anger is like a cancer it will eat your body up from the inside out. It is a complex feeling usually born of hurt and emotional pain. It is easier to control than it is to let fly and try to recapture. Letting go of anger is healing almost instantly a weight is lifted. There are a few steps that you can take to rid your body and your mind of anger.
1. Talk yourself out of it. Use self speak to talk yourself out of being angry. Sometimes if you re-evaluate the situation you will find that being angry is uncalled for.
2. Distract yourself. Take yourself someplace else away from the situation that is causing you to be angry, if leaving physically is impossible (maybe your boss upset you and you can’t just leave work) close your eyes and picture something soothing or think of something funny about the person that has made you angry. Picture the person with funny hair or dressed funny or try to remember an embarrassing moment about the person. It is difficult to be angry at someone that you can laugh at.
3. Redirect the angry energy. Go for a walk, or better yet a jog. Lift weights or some other activity that is going to physically tire you out. Being angry takes up a lot of energy, so if you burn some energy up in a positive way there will be no energy left to fuel the fire.
4. Meditate, clear your mind of all thoughts, breathe deeply and relax. Sleep is also a great way to get rid of anger, although usually if you are at the peak of anger, sleeping is not much of an option because the adrenaline is fueling the anger leaving you unable to sleep.
5. Anger management classes are widely available and if anger has been a recurring issue a class may be the key to getting things under control.
Keep in mind that the brain only spends two minutes releasing the chemicals that trigger anger, within those two minutes certain choices can be made to offset the anger. You can choose not to be angry before you even start getting angry.
