Subconscious Anger – An Overlooked Cause of Anxiety
By James Serio
We all have a subconscious mind that is operating 24 hours a day. It is much more than just a computer that analyzes information and manages bodily functions. It has–in many ways–a life of its own, though it is not entirely separate from our conscious thinking.
Our subconscious mind is often described as an “inner child” because of its ability to experience strong emotions that are sometimes blocked from our conscious experience. But the consequences of these subconscious emotions are all too evident–especially when it comes to anger.
When we are suffer pain as the result of the actions of others, we can naturally harbor unforgiveness in our heart even though we may believe–and feel–that we have forgiven the individual.
We can still be angry at the person who has caused us the pain and the God who allowed it to happen. And still not be aware of this anger! The anger is there–but on a subconscious level!
What we do experience is anxiety–often painful anxiety. And if we don’t realize that subconscious anger may exist, we have no clue as to what is causing the anxiety.
This subconscious anger is still a sin–a sin that results in a spiritual foothold (Ephesians 4:26-27).
The Bible doesn’t really explain all this. But it does provide a solution to the problem of subconscious anger. The solution will work even if we don’t understand what is going on!
Since we are angry at both God and man, both sins need to be addressed. I’ll make it simple.
First, anger at man: “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44 NIV).” Do this each time a thought of a person who has hurt you comes up.
Second, anger at God: “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV).” Do this too.
Make doing these things a habit. The more consistent you are, the more peace you will have.
